Canadian musician Dan Tait has spent a lifetime crafting music that resonates with warmth, relatability, and personal reflection. Originally from the Ottawa Valley, Tait’s introduction to music came early, influenced by his mother’s piano playing and his brother’s involvement in a rock band. From these modest beginnings, his passion for music grew, eventually leading him to a professional career that has spanned over 16 years.
Tait describes his musical style as folk, grounded in storytelling and emotional depth. His lyrics often stem from personal experiences, making his music deeply autobiographical. “There’s always a little bit of me in the songs,” Tait says, explaining how his music serves as both a reflection and a form of personal expression. Whether drawing on specific life events or tapping into shared human emotions, Tait’s songs often explore the beauty in life’s ordinary moments. He credits artists like John Prine as inspirations, pointing to their ability to find meaning in the every day—whether it’s a simple afternoon coffee or a conversation with a loved one.
His career has been marked by a journey of self-acceptance and artistic growth. Early in his career, Tait grappled with the pressure to conform to musical expectations, emulating others before finding his own voice. It wasn’t until he embraced his individuality that he found true artistic freedom. “Me, my stories, my voice, my songs—I’m enough,” he reflects. This realization transformed not only his approach to music but also his connection with his audience. Known for his warmth on stage, Tait has cultivated a reputation for drawing listeners in, creating an intimate and reciprocal energy during live performances.
Tait’s personal life has also informed his music in profound ways. He and his partner, singer-songwriter Aiden Mayes, will be performing at the Butterfly Run, an event that supports bereaved mothers and parents. Having experienced the loss of a child themselves, Tait and Mace will perform a set that includes a song they wrote in memory of their child. For Tait, the event is about more than just music; it’s about creating a safe space for families to come together, share their stories, and find solace in community. He emphasizes the importance of breaking the stigma around such losses, describing the event as a way for families to connect and feel less alone.
In addition to this emotional performance, Tait recently released Pack Up Blues, a song inspired by his years working in adventure tourism. The song captures the bittersweet nature of seasonal work, where tight bonds are formed with colleagues only to be broken at the end of each season. “It’s a celebratory song,” Tait says, noting the mix of excitement for new challenges and the sadness of parting ways. The track features guitar work and Americana influences, produced in collaboration with Andrew Judah, a producer Tait admires deeply.
While his musical career continues to evolve, Tait is also making strides toward a more personal and direct connection with his audience. In an effort to step back from the constant presence of social media, he has launched Dan’s Letters List, a monthly newsletter where he shares journal entries, poetry, and art. This platform allows him to engage with his listeners on a more intimate level, offering a glimpse into his creative process and the art that inspires him.
As Tait looks ahead, his focus remains on creating music that resonates with authenticity and emotional honesty. His journey as a musician has been one of embracing his own stories and voice, finding meaning in both the grand and the mundane. Whether through his performances, his lyrics, or his letters, Tait continues to build connections with those who appreciate the power of a heartfelt song.
In his parting words, Tait offers a simple reminder: “Take care of yourselves and take care of each other.” It’s a sentiment that reflects both the artist and the person behind the music—a musician who has learned to embrace his own path and, in doing so, offers his audience the gift of connection and understanding.
